Jesse Barrera grew up in San Diego, California. He developed a love for music when his stepfather bought a bass guitar, and he picked it up. Barrera learned to play along with his sister's punk rock albums and started his first band, SML (Small, Medium, Large), covering songs from MxPx, Blink-182 and New Found Glory. He joined the rock band My American Heart and gained global attention. He eventually left the band to begin a solo career as a producer and songwriter.

His musical influences include Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, James Taylor, and Boyz II Men.

Based in Los Angeles, Barrera runs his own production company out of his studio, The Cave.
