B SIDE PLAYERS IN CONCERT:
San Diego's B Side Players have been bringing the rhythm with their soulful brand of Latin global funk for more than two decades. The band's eclectic sound is a unique cultural patchwork that brings together musical traditions from Cuba, Mexico, Brazil, and Jamaica with the rock and hip hop stylings of their Southern California hometown. It all comes together perfectly at their live shows, where the band's eight talented members kick out upbeat, horn-driven jams like "Calavera" and "Pleasure and Pain" with infectious energy while frontman Karlos "Solrak" Paez keeps things grounded with thoughtful lyrics that promote a message of social consciousness. With their polyrhythmic tunes, impressive musicianship, and funky attitude, B Side Players serve up an unbeatable dose of Latin fusion fun every time they take the stage.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
B Side Players was formed in San Diego in 1994 by Karlos Paez, the son of a skilled trombonist who played with Latin music heavyweights like Los Moonlights and La Banda El Recodo. The Players built a fast following, becoming local favorites and earning several San Diego music awards on the strength of their stellar live shows. In 1997 they issued their debut album Renacimiento, a blend of Latin funk, rock, and reggae that impressed critics and led to tours with mainstream acts like Papa Roach and Ben Harper. Their rise continued in the '00s with albums like 2002's Maiz and 2007's Fire In The Youth, acclaimed releases that further showcased their knack for musical cross-pollination. Since then the B Side Players have kept busy, releasing new material and heading out on a 2016 tour that paid tribute to the late great Curtis Mayfield.
