BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
New Orleans-born Sammie "Big Sam" Williams took to the trombone at an early age, receiving formal instruction on the instrument while attending the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts as a youth. In his teens he founded the Stooges Brass Band, and before long he was playing in the legendary Dirty Dozen Brass Band. In the early '00s he formed Big Sam's Funky Nation, a talented group of players with whom he developed a unique jazz rock hybrid. The band established itself with albums like Birth of a Nation (2003) and Peace Love & Understanding (2008), but their true claim to fame was their electrifying live shows. The band's critically acclaimed festival appearances include Bonnaroo, Voodoo Music Experience, and the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, and they continue to get ticket buyers on their feet every time they take the stage on tour.
