BLACK SHEEP IN CONCERT:
Back in the early '90s, Black Sheep hit the rap world with a vibrant attack as intelligent as it was visceral. Now MC Dres is back in the driver’s seat and ready to bring his elite rhymes and inventive beats back to the masses. Borrowing eclectic samples from jazz, R&B, and rockabilly, the group unleashes infectious hits like “The Choice Is Yours”, “Flavor of the Month”, and “Strobelite Honey” in concert. Black Sheep still know how to make their drum machines bump, and they're sure to get heads nodding and rumps shaking as they bring their cerebral hip hop to fans across North America.
BACKGROUND SNAPSHOT:
Even though Andres “Dres” Titus and William “Mista Lawnge” McLean hail from New York, they didn’t meet until both of their families relocated to Sanford, NC. Upon returning to New York the duo began running with the progressive hip hop collective Native Tongues, which was dedicated to crafting uplifting lyrics and utilizing diverse samples. Following the lead of associated groups A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul, Black Sheep infiltrated the rap world with the clever lyrics of their first single “Flavor of the Month” in 1991. Their debut album A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing was released the same year and became an instant classic thanks to popular singles like “The Choice Is Yours” and “Strobelite Honey”. Despite their success, Mercury Records hardly promoted the group’s 1994 follow-up Non-Fiction, and they disbanded following a frustrating tour. Though the two briefly reunited to record the EP Red Light, Green Light in 2000, they again parted ways, leaving Dres as the sole member. He returned in 2006 with 8WM/Novakane, after which he began touring regularly to bring Black Sheep’s music and message to the masses.
