Clem Snide On Tour
Helmed by gifted singer/songwriter Eef Barzelay, Clem Snide has been creating beautiful, understated Americana-tinged indie rock for the past three decades. Featuring various lineups over the course of its existence, one thing has remained constant: Barzelay's introspective, poignant songwriting. His lyrics adeptly tackle the most existential issues, including life and death, personal identity and conflicted relationships with hope and humor.
The struggles the Israeli-born singer has endured over the past decade inspired his 2020 album, Beyond Forever Just Beyond, produced by Scott Avett of The Avett Brothers. During that time, the singer lost his house and had to declare bankruptcy, but through it all he found what he calls "a deeper, spiritual relationship with life." This transcendence is evident on his gorgeous and understated album, which has garnered plenty of critical acclaim, hailed by Pitchfork as "charmingly at ease and refreshingly ambitious."
Witness the introspective beauty and gifted songwriting of Clem Snide for yourself when they head out on tour at a city near you.
Clem Snide Live in Concert
Named after a character in William S. Burroughs' controversial novel Naked Lunch, Clem Snide began as a college project of Eef Barzelay in Boston in the early '90s. What started out as a noisy punk-jazz ensemble evolved into a more introspective and wistful alt-country project when Barzelay parted ways with the band's original members and returned to the East Coast, where he grew up. He began playing shows around New York and performing material he wrote while living at home with his parents.
Clem Snide's debut album, You Were a Diamond, came out in 1998, showcasing the introspective songwriting and subtleties of their trademark understated style. Critics soon caught on, with Rolling Stone praising Barzelay's songwriting as "soulful and incisive" and NPR calling him "the most underrated songwriter in the business today, with a sneakily firm grasp on poignancy and humor."
The band has produced more than a dozen studio albums over the course of their multi-decade career and amassed several high-profile fans in the process, including Ben Folds, whom Barzelay supported on tour, Scott Avett, who produced Clem Snide's 2020 album Beyond Forever Just Beyond, and Justin Vernon of Bon Iver.
