DINHO DINHO began when Shaan Rao decided to start recording his songs on something better than iPhone Voice Memos. As he slowly learned to record and produce, DINHO began picking up other instruments that he needed to fill out the parts of his songs besides the guitar/vocals he had been exploring. Playing around with different drum styles under his chord progressions and melodies, he eventually took a liking to the way in which his surf rock like sound paired with drums you would normally hear in Trap / R&B music. That’s one example of how DINHO puts various sounds from across their eclectic music tastes, and sometimes opposing sounds, together in the assemblage of their sound. The artist’s first album is a collection of songs written before 2021 in which DINHO sways between grungepop and indie rock, with hints of soul, funk, R&B (not unlike how Steve Lacy meshes these genres into his overall “indie rock/pop” sound) and bossa nova. It’s worth mentioning the daughter of Bossa Nova herself, Bebel Gilberto, found humor in the artist’s musical moniker, which references Brazilian Portuguese nomenclature in a way that Bebel aptly described as, “a double diminutive.”
After putting out his third album in April 2023, and finally putting some effort into submitting his music to curators/playlists, DINHO’s music began attracting more listeners. Within a year, the artist page had quickly amassed over 80,000 total streams on Spotify. This spurred Shaan to team up with long time musical collaborator Thomas Norton, in order to begin playing live shows. Since joining DINHO DINHO, Thomas has also been writing lyrics and instrumental parts for songs alongside Shaan, and the two have more than half their next album recorded already. As a duo, DINHO DINHO spent Summer 23’ playing a few shows: All St Gallery (77 East 3rd St), in a recording session with the gallery for upcoming artists, and at the associated venue, All St Studios (119 Hester St), with the drums and other instruments playing off speakers or simply in a stripped down set without drums. Since then, DINHO DINHO has enlisted a drummer and bassist, and they’ve further crafted their sound as a full band, carving out a place for themselves somewhere in between the genres listed above.
