Golden State Warriors History
Founded in 1946, the Warriors called the city of Philadelphia home for 16 memorable years before moving to the West Coast in 1962 to become the San Francisco Warriors and ultimately, in 1971, the Golden State Warriors when the team moved across the Bay to Oakland. The team's storied history includes seven NBA Championships, an NBA-record 73 wins during the 2015-16 season, eight players named to the NBA's 75th Anniversary Team, and 31 members inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. In addition to their record 73 wins during a single season, the Warriors also hold NBA records for the best regular season and best postseason run. The Golden State Warriors also have the distinction of having the third most NBA Championships to their name, and the third most appearances in the NBA Finals. The only teams that have more are the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics. Additionally, Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson are considered to be among the greatest backcourts of all time. The team's most lauded player in their history is Wilt Chamberlain, who spent five-and-a-half seasons with the Warriors, including three when they were based in Philadelphia. The Golden State Warriors have won the NBA Championship a total of seven times, including in 2022.
