Amherst, MA-born J Mascis cut his teeth performing in hardcore band Deep Wound before founding Dinosaur Jr. in 1984. Over the course of ten studio albums and numerous other releases, Dinosaur Jr. established itself as one of the preeminent bands in indie rock, achieving considerable crossover success in the '90s with mainstream hits like "Start Choppin'" and "Feel the Pain". Mascis made his solo debut in 1996 with the acoustic album Martin + Me, an acclaimed record that marked a new chapter in his career. Since then he has released several other acclaimed albums, in addition to continuing to record and perform with Dinosaur Jr. In 2014 Mascis released Tied to a Star, a hushed, delicate album full of wistful folk songs that both contrast with and complement his previous rock work.
