Los Angeles Clippers History
The Clippers franchise began in 1970, when they were located in Buffalo, New York, and were known as the Buffalo Braves. The franchise welcomed its first star in 1972, when they selected forward Bob McAdoo with the No. 2 overall pick in the NBA Draft.
McAdoo won Rookie of the Year and led the Braves to the playoffs in three consecutive seasons. He was named NBA MVP in the 1974-75 season, and remains the only player in the history of the Clippers franchise to win that honor.
The franchise moved in 1978 after the ownership rights to the franchise were traded to Irv Levin, who previously owned the Boston Celtics. Levin, who was a resident of Southern California, moved the franchise to San Diego and renamed it the Clippers. The franchise's stay in San Diego didn't last long. Levin sold the team to Donald Sterling, who moved the franchise 120 miles north to Los Angeles and retained the Clippers name.
The Clippers began their best era of success in 2010, when they drafted Blake Griffin with the No. 1 overall pick. Griffin went on to win Rookie of the Year in his first season.
The Clippers acquired Chris Paul in a trade with the New Orleans Hornets in 2011, and "Lob City" was born. They advanced to the second round of the playoffs that same season, recording their second playoff series win in 36 years.
The Clippers followed that by setting a new franchise record with 56 wins in the 2012-13 season, which began a streak of five consecutive seasons with 50 or more wins and a playoff berth.
The Clippers finished second in the Pacific Division in the 2019-20 season and lost in the second round of the NBA Playoffs.
During the 2020-21 season, the LA Clippers again returned to the playoffs. This time, they advanced to the Western Conference Finals where they lost to the Phoenix Suns. The team finished fourth in the west overall and defeated the Dallas Mavericks and Utah Jazz in a thrilling seven-game playoff series.
