They play at Tiger Stadium, which opened in 1925 and has a current capacity of 102,321.
LSU Tigers Football History
Louisiana State University first fielded a football team in 1893, and they were named the Tigers during the 1896 season. Coach Paul Dietzel led LSU to some of their greatest successes in the 1950s, installing a three-platoon system which helped lead the Tigers to their first national title in 1958, while Billy Cannon won the Heisman Trophy playing for the school in 1959. LSU has continued to be a force to be reckoned with in recent years. In 2003, Nick Saban led the Tigers to a BCS title, as LSU defeated Oklahoma 21-14 in the Sugar Bowl.
From 2005 to 2016, Les Miles built on this success, gaining LSU a reputation for top-notch recruiting and defensive backs. Many Tiger stars who played under Miles have gone on to achieve success in the NFL, including Patrick Peterson, Leonard Fournette and Odell Beckham Jr. The 2007 LSU Tigers became just the second team with two losses to win a national championship, defeating Ohio State 38-24 in the BCS National Championship Game. The 2011 LSU team defeated Alabama 9-6 in a No. 1 vs. No. 2 showdown in Tuscaloosa, only to lose to the Crimson Tide in the BCS title game. Under Ed Orgeron, LSU defeated the University of Central Florida 40-32 in the 2019 Fiesta Bowl, giving the UCF Knights their first loss in more than two seasons. The following year the Tigers went on to a 15-0 record and winning the national championship led by future NFL quarterback Joe Burrow.
