Mariachi Sol de Mexico on Tour
When Mariachi Sol de Mexico comes to town, the 13-piece ensemble brings one of Mexico's most joyful and impressive cultural heritage with them. Founded in 1981 by Maestro Jos Hernndez, Mariachi Sol's strings, horns, guitars, emotional vocals and colorful traditional outfits known as charro suits offer a rich live experience. With 19 albums to their name, they are steeped in a tradition that Hernndez keeps up-to-date with passion and professionalism.
The group's recent album Leyendas de Mi Pueblo (Legends of My Land) offers a Grammy-nominated deep dive into the music of Mexican composers Jorge Negrete, Pedro Infante and Miguel Aceves Meja. It also pays homage to legendary performers Alfredo Jimnez, Javier Solis and Vicente Fernandez.
A Mariachi Sol de Mexico concert is a trip through Mexico punctuated by those cathartic, joyous yells known as gritos. And you don't need to speak Spanish to soak up the experience. After all, as Jos Hernndez once put it, "you are coming to another kind of celebration. Instead of a party, you are coming to a fiesta."
About Mariachi Sol de Mexico
Mariachi's origins lie in the countryside, but it became the sound of urban Mexico at the beginning of the 20th century. Jos Hernndez is a fifth-generation musician who started his own group after playing in his father's Mariachi los Galleros. Based in Los Angeles, Hernndez is a trumpeter, bandleader, producer, scholar and teacher. He founded the nonprofit Mariachi Heritage Society in 1991.
For Hernndez, mariachi is very much a living art it's folk music that can assume symphonic proportions. Mariachi Sol performed on Linda Ronstadt's hit album Canciones de Mi Padre and worked with Willie Nelson, the Beach Boys and Jos Feliciano. The group's music is also heard in the films Seabiscuit, American Me and Glory Road.
The performers in Mariachi Sol de Mexico sing about love, death, betrayal, politics, country life and revolutionary heroes in corridos, boleros, rancheras, huapangos, jarabes, polkas, waltzes and other traditional Mexican styles. The group is also renowned for their annual "Merry-Achi" Christmas concerts. In Mariachi Sol lies the beating heart of Mexico, and it's bringing the fiesta to you.
