About Middle Tennessee State Univ Blue Raiders Men's Basketball
There have only been eight No. 15 seeds that have beaten a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament. The most recent? The Middle Tennessee State University Blue Raiders, who beat the Michigan State Spartans 90-81 in 2016. It's the type of victory that a school can hang its hat on for years.
For the Blue Raiders, it was only their third win ever in the NCAA tournament, following first-round victories in 1982 and 1989. The team would notch another win the following year with a 81-72 victory over the Minnesota Gophers.
The program's history isn't as storied as the teams it has toppled in the tournament, but it is there. Middle Tennessee State had a good run in the 1980s, making the tournament four times (1982, 1985, 1987, and 1989) to go along with three conference regular season and tournament wins. More recently, they've won the regular season title in Conference USA five times since 2010, although only got the aforementioned two NCAA tournament invites by virtue of winning the C-USA conference tournament.
