St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium
The St. Louis Cardinals are one of the most successful professional baseball franchises of all time. The team has won 11 World Series titles, recently in 2006 and 2011, and has taken home 19 National League pennants. Since 2022, the Cardinals have been managed by Oliver Marmol. The Cardinals currently play their games in the downtown ballpark Busch Stadium, which has a capacity of over 45,000. The venue opened in 2006 and was built right next door to the team's old home stomping grounds, Busch Memorial Stadium, which was then demolished.
St. Louis Cardinals History
The St. Louis franchise was founded in 1882 and played in the American Association before joining the fledgling National League starting with the 1892 season. Prior to becoming known as the Cardinals in 1900, the team was called the Brown Stockings (and then just the Browns) as well as the Perfectos. Early on, the team played home games at multiple places around St. Louis, including Sportsman's Park, before moving into Busch Memorial Stadium in 1966. The team currently plays in the National League Central, the same division as their rival Chicago Cubs.
Over the years, the Cardinals have fielded some of the most memorable baseball teams of all time. In 1934, the squad was known as the Gashouse Gang: Led by a pair of ace pitching brothers - Dizzy Dean and his younger brother, Paul - as well as manager/player Frankie Frisch and outfielder Joe "Ducky" Medwick, the team won the World Series over the Detroit Tigers. In the coming decades, the Cardinals boasted future Hall of Famers such as slugger Stan Musial, ace pitcher Bob Gibson, and fleet-footed outfielder Lou Brock. In the modern era, the Cardinals boasted one of the best defensive players of all time, shortstop Ozzie "The Wizard" Smith, as well as one of the most powerful hitters, Albert Pujols.
