Texas Christian University Horned Frogs at Amon G. Carter Stadium
Amon G. Carter Stadium, also known as "The Carter" and "Hell's Half Acre," has been the home of the TCU Horned Frogs in Forth Worth, Texas since 1930. The first game played by TCU in The Carter (named after a prominent Forth Worth businessman) was a win in October of 1940 against the University of Arkansas. Five years later, between 1935 and 1940, TCU won their only two National Championships. To date, the largest home crowd for TCU was in November 2009 when the Horned Frogs bested Utah 55-28.
In 2012, the Horned Frogs broke a school record, selling out every game played at The Carter. In 2019, the stadium underwent a $118 million expansion renovation, completely overhauling the East side of the stadium. TCU's biggest rivals are all based in Texas: the Baylor Bears in Waco, the SMU Mustangs in Dallas, the Texas Longhorns in Austin, and Texas Tech Red Raiders in Lubbock.
Texas Christian University Horned Frogs Football History
The TCU Horned Frogs have had an impressive run of success since their first season in 1896. Between 1920 and 2022, the Horned Frogs have won 18 Conference titles, two National Championships and an additional National Championship appearance. The Horned Frogs' most sustained period of success came at the reins of former head coach Gary Patterson, who was at the helm in Fort Worth from 2000 through 2021. In his 21 seasons, Patterson accumulated 181 wins to 79 losses, and owns the school's all-time record for career wins.
Despite going undefeated in 2010, with a perfect 13-0 record, TCU was denied the chance to compete for a National Championship and instead beat the Wisconsin Badgers 21-19 in the Rose Bowl, finishing that season No. 2 in the AP Poll. Two years later, TCU would join the Power Five conferences, moving from the Mountain West to the Big12 in 2012.
In 2022, led by first-year head coach Sonny Dykes, TCU went on a historic run, going 13-2 and losing in the National Championship game to the Georgia Bulldogs. Horned Frogs quarterback Max Duggan also finished second in the Heisman Trophy voting that season. To date, TCU has had one Heisman Trophy winner, Davey O'Brien in 1938. Duggan went on to win the Davey O'Brien award for prolific quarterback play in 2022.
