I have seen Terence Blanchard perform a few times at large and small venues. This was by far the best. It was an intimate venue set up like a jazz club, which gave me the opportunity to sit up front and be completely immersed in sound.
Mr. Blanchard is a joy to watch as he plays: there is an intensity in his energy and you feel bathed in every note. The particular songs he and The Collective played were driving and explosive, then alluringly comtemplative.
I have been a fan of his music for quite some time. Traditional jazz purists will find this set a departure from his earlier works, but if they have ever tapped into the spirit of his music, they will still find Mr. Blanchard standing at the heart of it. He has put together a set of musicians who at once complement him and allow him to blossom within this style.
A joy to watch, a joy to hear.
