About TuRae
TuRae Live
A longtime favorite in Philadelphia's comedy scene, TuRae Gordon has found fans across America and the world. A veteran of shows such as HBO's Def Comedy Jam and the winner of the World Cup Comedy Clash at London's Hackney Empire Theatre in 2007, TuRae is a skilled stand-up who's well-known for his easy, engaging manner and his hilarious take on topics that every audience member can relate to.
TuRae's cpmedy career began at Temple University when he signed up for an open mic night on a friend's encouragement. His success that night inspired him to try his luck at the Laff House, a hub for comedy in Philadelphia. It was there he developed his stand-up skills while also giving opportunities to newcomers (including another young student named Kevin Hart) at his weekly talent showcase, Thursday Night Hype.
TuRae gained wider attention through his appearances on BET's Comicview and international competitions such as the World Cup Comedy Clash. In 2008, he realized a dream when he was featured on Russell Simmons' Def Comedy Jam on HBO. Later TV appearances included a recurring role on Underground Kings as well as stand-up spots on Live at Gotham, The Funny Spot and Comics Unleashed. In 2017, he won the ABFF Comedy Wings Comedy Competition and was a finalist for StandUp NBC. In 2020, he released Tu Rae: A Comedy Album, recorded live before a sold-out crowd at Punch Line Philly.
TuRae Background
Though TuRae Gordon was always fond of roasting friends and family while growing up in Philadelphia, he didn't catch the comedy bug until he was studying at Temple University. Coaxed by a friend to sign up for an open mic, TuRae was thrilled by not only the free refreshments at the show but the $50 he earned for performing.
TuRae soon became a regular performer at the Laff House, the Philadelphia comedy club. After making his first foray into television on BET's Comicview and winning his first international comedy competition at the World Cup Comedy Clash in London, TuRae achieved one of his early dreams in 2008 when he became a featured performer on Russell Simmons' Def Comedy Jam on HBO. TuRae followed that success with appearances on such shows as The Funny Spot and Comics Unleashed. Meanwhile, his busy touring schedule regularly took him to venues across America as well as destinations like Bermuda, St. Kitts and the Cayman Islands.
The winner of HBO's ABFF Comedy Wings and a finalist on Standup NBC, TuRae Gordon returned home to Punch Line Philly to record Tu Rae: A Comedy Album, released in 2020.
