Yvonne Orji is an Emmy-nominated Nigerian-American comedian, actress, writer, producer and author.
Orji can next be seen in "Vacation Friends 2," the highly anticipated sequel to the 2021 Hulu comedy "Vacation Friends," where she reprises her role as 'Emily' opposite John Cena and Lil Rel Howery. Upon its release, "Vacation Friends" netted the streamer its most-watched opening weekend for a Hulu original film. The sequel will be available for streaming on August 25, 2023. She also lent her voice to the Netflix animated series "My Dad the Bounty Hunter," which was released earlier this year and quickly renewed for a second season, which will be released on August 17, 2023.
She can currently be seen in the critically acclaimed horror-comedy film "The Blackening," which centers on a group of Black friends who go away for the weekend only to find themselves trapped in a cabin with a killer who forces them to play a game with life-or-death consequences. The film debuted at the 2022 Toronto Film Festival and was released by Lionsgate on June 16, 2023.
It was recently announced that Orji signed a two-year first-look deal with Sony Pictures Television. Under the deal, she will develop scripted drama and comedy series for streaming and cable. Additionally, she is set to star and executive produce the female empowerment bodybuilding drama series "Stronger," which is currently in development at Netflix.
In spring of 2021, Orji published her debut book Bamboozled by Jesus: How God Tricked Me into the Life of My Dreams. In the book, Orji takes readers on a journey through twenty-five life lessons, gleaned from her own experiences and her favorite source of inspiration, the Bible. The paperback edition of the book will be released on September 12, 2023.
As a stand-up comic, Orji released her debut stand-up special "Momma, I Made It" on HBO in 2020, which was shot in the two place she called home while growing up, Washington, D.C. and Nigeria. She released her second HBO stand-up special "A Whole Me" in October of 2022. A unique mash-up of stand-up comedy and scripted vignettes, the special showcased Orji's range as a performer and vulnerability as a human, while also serving as a no-holds-barred therapy session for both the artist and the audience. She previously opened for Chris Rock on various stops of his "Total Blackout Tour" and headlined her own first comedy tour "Lagos To Laurel."
Orji is best known for her performance as Issa Rae's best friend and fan favorite, 'Molly' on the HBO comedy series "Insecure," which garnered her an Emmy nomination for Best Supporting Actress. Previous credits also include starring in Malcolm D. Lee's comedy film "Night School" opposite Tiffany Haddish and Kevin Hart and serving as a host and executive producer for the HBO Max reality series "My Mom Your Dad."
Outside of her creative work, Orji is dedicated to her charitable efforts. In 2008 she spent six months working in post-conflict Liberia with Population Services International (PSI), an NGO that utilizes social marketing in the adoption of healthy behaviors. While in Liberia, she worked with a group of talented youth to help build a mentoring program as well as a weekly talk show that helped educate and prevent teen pregnancy and HIV/AIDS. Orji has brought her work with the youth community back to the states, where she is currently involved with (RED) campaigns and faith-based youth ministries.
Before moving to Los Angeles where she currently resides, Yvonne earned a bachelor's degree in Sociology and a Masters of Public Health from George Washington University.
