Cincinnati Bengals Team History
Founded by legendary head coach and Pro Football Hall of Famer Paul Brown, the Bengals played their first season in 1968. The Bengals got their name from Brown's coaching past, as tiger mascots had been a common tread throughout his career. Coincidentally the "Bengals" had been the nickname of a Cincinnati pro football franchise of the late 1930s and early '40s. The Bengals have won 11 AFC North Championship titles and three AFC Championship titles, first advancing to the Super Bowl during the 1981 and 1988 seasons and most recently in 2022 for Super Bowl LVI. Since 2005 the team has advanced to the playoffs 10 times, including six AFC North Division titles.
